Listen To Spanish

If you want to learn the Spanish language, then listen to Spanish being spoken as much as you can. You should certainly get a course to help you understand what is being said, but simply listening is arguably the best way to absorb the sounds and nuances of the language.

Before long you will start to pick out individual words. When you start to listen to Spanish it will be very different though. It will be just a jumble of sound that makes no sense. Occasionally you will catch a word that you recognize, but by the time you evaluate it, seek out its meaning from your mind's database and pinpoint it, the speaker will have moved on by several sentences.

This will be very frustrating at first. If you force yourself to listen to Spanish you will slowly get better at picking out the words, but it will be in all too short bursts. They will be very satisfying bursts of lucidity though. You will suddenly feel that you are getting to grips with the language. Then someone else will say something and you won't have a clue what was said.

Over time if you can listen to Spanish often and regularly, the short bursts of understanding what the words mean will grow increasingly longer. You will reach a point after a short while where you start to understand what the general meaning of the conversation is, though you may still not understand every word.

This is a very satisfying stage, for you can follow a conversation, albeit in general terms only. You may get lost if the conversation gets heated and the people involved start speaking rapidly, but you are making progress.

When you listen to Spanish it is a passive exercise, but a necessary first step. When someone asks you a direct question, that's when it gets difficult. At that point you have to make a response. This means that you have to understand the question, evaluate it, and say something back that will be a relevant and meaningful answer. It's not easy at first, but if you continue to listen to Spanish on a regular basis, it will come in time.

It's slightly easier to enter a conversation. You have a bit more time to think up the right words. However, all too often by the time you have your little sentence practiced in your mind perfectly, the general conversation has taken a different turn; the people are talking about something else and your contribution will now sound silly.

One of the best ways to listen to Spanish is through the TV. If you live in an area where Spanish TV stations can be found, listen to them. News programs are excellent examples where you can fairly easily follow along. The pictures usually give you a good clue as to what they are talking about, and then it's just a matter of trying to pick out the words and understand them.

Perhaps the best things on TV to listen to are the commercials. They become familiar over time and they are simple enough to understand without too much difficulty. If you want to listen to Spanish and understand it quickly, go for the TV commercials every time. Admittedly, your understanding will consist mainly of the best washing machine powder, pizzas and real estate, but it will be in Spanish at least!
